This is Eric Clapton at his best. EC has not played with this noteworthy fire and intensity since the 70’s, including his Derek And The Domino’s days. His guitar playing is absolutely FEROCIOUS…which probably shouldn’t arrive as a immense surprise, as this concert took location during his ‘Back To The Cradle’ period, his most convincing and inspired studio album in ages.
The sound quality on this DVD is apt. As it should be, because the extraordinary TONES Clapton coaxes out of his guitar and amp are that which most guitar players would extinguish for.
The image quality is also outstanding, very certain and spicy. The camera work is astronomical, with LOTS of closeups of EC and his guitar during the solos, which is an added treat for guitar junkies (myself included.)
For my money, this is the BEST Eric Clapton concert film available. If you’re an Eric Clapton fan, this DVD is the one to obtain.

This concert video is for those people who assume that the Clapton of the 90s has lost his guitar skills. The reason why everyone does not know how gargantuan he is, is because in the mid to leisurely 90s Clapton’s best work, especially live, has been blinded by todays teen pop. I have listened to every live album of Clapton’s I could score. Eric Clapton is one of the greatest live performers and in my book the greatest guitarist, technically and for me emotionally. I have looked sincerely into countless guitarists and solos. Worn like and I shot the sherriff in this concert are among the best solos i have heard ever. Five long years is vast too, if you have patience. And those of you are wondering why this ragged, skinny white guy with glasses who did that dumb song about his son is revered as one of the best guitarists in the world, this video is for you. Mountainous music today has to be searched for. And if you are reading this review, you have found it.

[This is a review of the DVD version] If you fancy venerable poor SF movies but haven’t ever seen them given the Mystery Science Theater treatment, you owe it to yourself to choose up this DVD! Mike Nelson and his robot pals Crow and Tom Servo discover this relentlessly laughable turkey of a movie (a scientist saves the severed head of his girlfriend and puts her in a pan, where she pleads with him to let her die. How sloppily-put-together is this film? The filmmakers apparently forgot their enjoy title and call it “The Head That Wouldn’t Die” in the ruin credits.) –and throughout the entire film, Tom and the `bots mercilessly riff on the film with droll comments and jokes that’ll have you rolling in your seats. Long a staple of Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel, this is one of the first DVDs of this classic comedy series (many others are available on VHS) . In addition to the pristine and certain relate you obtain with DVD, Rhino has also included the pudgy *original* version of “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” on the flip-side of the disc so you can gape it without Mike and the `bots (to riff on your acquire, perhaps? ) . The DVD menus are innovative and worth checking out unprejudiced for the clever swish-pan of the bridge of the Satellite of Adore (Crow, Servo, and Gypsy flash past us) . If I had any quibble at all it’s a minor one… why is the DVD chapter that begins the film entitled “It’s Movie Time!” when every MSTie knows it should be “We’ve got Movie Effect!”? But I’ll set up with minor problems like that as long as Rhino continues to give us these spacious reissues of classic MST3K episodes. Now if they’d only release “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” and “Outlaw”… (Also recommended in this series: the DVD version of “Mystery Science Theater 3000: Eegah.”)
I first saw this movie when I was in the 4th grade or thereabouts, and it haunted the living bejesus out of me.
But what do you know when you’re in the 4th grade?
Now that MST3K has reissued this movie and I’ve watched it perhaps 10 times, I laugh all the diagram through it. The dialogue is bad. The basic spot recalls countless puns about folks who lose their heads and flash-in-the-pan actresses. Angry Scientist Bill Courtner’s girlfriend has lost hers in a fiery car break (”Honey roasted,” comments one of Mike’s companions) . Obsessed scientist that he is, he keeps her head alive in a lasagna pan plump of “adreno-serum” in the basement laboratory of his country status. She says, “Let me die!” enough times that you’re ready to oblige her, then strikes up a liaison, sort of, with the thing that lives in Bill’s closet–the product of an earlier experiment that went awry. (When Bill looks in the closet, you’re dying to hear, “Omygawd, it’s Rosanne!” but Mike’s pals missed that one.) The scene in the seedy strip club sends me into hysterics. Best line here, robot Crow observing one of the girls: “I must have blood before the night is done!”

There are some godawful blunders. For example, the scene in which Bill enters the country situation with a original girlfriend follows very closely after his assistant Curt’s having stumbled around the same room bleeding profusedly from … shall we say, a farewell-to-arms type encounter with the thing in the closet. So where’s all the blood?
The ending is a bit gory (though tame by today’s standards) . The thing in the closet certainly wins the shocking award for that year. But when he/it turns away toward the stairwell after making mayhem starting a fire in the lab and taking a bite out of terrible Bill’s throat, we gawk another injurious flaw: you can actually sight where the shroud is tied on at the succor of the actor’s head! Now THAT’s droll!
Not to mention how Bill’s conventional girlfriend, unruffled in her pan at the extinguish, manages to laugh without the abet of chest, diaphragm or lungs. (I forgot, she has neck juice.)

Incidentally, in my version the ruin credits also screw up the title, calling it The HEAD That Wouldn’t Die.
Mike and his robots’ running commentary, though, offers nonstop comedy you can luxuriate in over and over again. I haven’t been panning this movie. (Sorry!) Four stars for amusement value.

She certainly doesn’t view like a “monster!” She has not a single
line of dialog in the film, not even a yelp or explain, objective a yowl at
the climax. This movie was evidently not only her debut on screen
but also her final appearance. She doesn’t seem to have ever been
in anything else. I first saw this movie on late-night TV support in
the `60s, I believe, and she’s the only thing I ever remembered about
it! Well, that, and the final scene where star Robert Clarke reads a
lengthy, ludicrous speech from a limited scrap of paper!
The whole movie is ludicrous, with dreadful acting, inane narration and
dialog, humorous set, inept direction, and homemade special effects
that Ed Wood would have been ashamed of, but it’s unruffled fun, a
perfect example of how an enterprising wanna-be film-maker can
borrow money (in this case impartial $18,000!) and locations, and using
his friends and relatives and a few professionals, can churn out a
movie in a few days that makes a super microscopic profit.
Writer/producer/director Ronald Ashcroft studied under the
master, Roger Corman, on Day the World Ended, and learned
how to do it. Actor Clarke learned from Ashcroft and he, too,
went on to try his hand with The Frightful Sun Demon.

This DVD edition has fair average image and sound quality, a
chapter index, and the theatrical trailer, but there’s also two pages
of liner notes by film historian Tom Weaver that’s very
informative, with quotes by Ashcroft. Add this one to your `50s
cult classic collection!
Here is a brief synopsis, followed by some of the other miscellaneous reasons I like this flick so much:
The AS-M (who kills with a mere touch) stalks a geologist, a dazzling socialite, and three kidnappers who are hiding out at the geologists’s isolated hilltop cabin during what may loosely be deemed “night.” Suffice it to say, some of them don’t live through it. Then there’s an ironic sort of ending that achieves absolutely no irony whatsoever because it is all improper for a number of reasons. Essentially, it’s an extremely awful man’s ‘Key Largo’ meets an equally impoverished man’s ‘Alien.’ Or you could contemplate at it as a precursor to ‘The Beast From Terrorized Cave,’ only quicker and sillier. (I guess I could add that it makes more sense than Understanding 9, and is perhaps equal in coherency to Bride of the Monster. But somehow is more palatable than either, at least to me.)
The spaceship is represented in flight as a lit match; the actress playing the spacebabe split her skin-tight suit early during shooting, so she has to befriend away from the camera for the entire movie (actually, this is oddly effective) ; blaring chords sound when nothing is happening; people support referring to the attractive alien lady as a rank monster; everyone keeps returning to the cabin for safety, even though the AS-M can and repeatedly does enter at will through a vast (and broken-out) window.
The funniest bit of all is revealed in the liner notes: the saga of the occupy(s) former during filming. I won’t slay it for you, but it will acquire me laugh and bellow forever. It is one of the most pathetically messed-up things I have ever heard happen in moviemaking, Battlefield Earth not withstanding.
If these things sound like a fun time to you, recall this movie fleet. Others beware.
I personally only wish I could have witnessed them making this movie at the time. That had to have been even MORE interesting.
P.S. The DVD transfer is fair OK, but I’m quite certain that’s only because the new film itself was resplendent shaky.

The five star rating I gave Night of the Living Insensible is, of course, for the unusual, uncut, unadulterated edition. The new is, quite simply, the most frightful movie I’ve ever seen, even when compared to dismay classics like Diabolique (the new French version), Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween and The Knowing. I saw NOTLD when I was 9 years traditional on Creature Features at midnight after a funeral. I had nightmares for the next two nights. The film quiet gives me the chills whenever I recognize it (usually at Halloween) .

When the 30th Anniversary Edition came out, I bought it on VHS as I was though-provoking to scrutinize what they termed as “fresh footage.” What I got was a wicked mess that butchered the recent film, removed the current music for a unpleasant synthesizer catch and added pointless footage that makes the viewer want to grind his teeth down to the gums. One of the additions is a novel character: a fire and brimstone preacher. While the acting in the new is amateurish, at best, the “actor” who plays the preacher makes the new cast inspect like Oscar winners by comparison. He snarls, and howls and gnashes his teeth like he has rabies. Even more ridiculous is the extra footage of Bill Hinzman — the “cemetary zombie” in the new. The extra footage shows Hinzman’s character emerging from the grave, then cuts to the novel 1968 opening footage with Judith O’Dea and Russell Streiner. It’s absolutely ridiculous as Hinzman looks 30 years older in the modern footage. In addition, there are more zombies and a current ending to the film that makes no sense whatsoever. This “current” version is a part of trash that desecrates the most hideous film of all time. Avoid it like the plague!

Okay…as I’d feared, my negative review of the John Russo-massacred “30th Anniversary Edition” of Night of the Living Dumb has been lumped unwittingly into this product’s review, so I’ m writing this one to account for.
This DVD edition is the best edition I’ve seen of the film yet. Anchor Bay may have raised the ires of legions of Living Boring fans by releasing the sacrilegious 30th Anniversary Edition, but Elite Entertainment did true by this novel edition.
George A. Romero’s personal appreciation appears in the abet of this DVD — this immediately restores our faith. And the contents don’t disappoint — the record and sound are kindly, and though this doesn’t exactly have the richest batch of bonus materials (sets like the superb 3-disc edition of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the modern double-disc Re-Animator both feature loads of extras), it is a nice solid collection. You procure a Duane Jones interview (sadly with only audio and no image, but collected tall) ; an on-camera chat between Judith Ridley (Judy) and Marilyn Eastman (Helen) ; the hilarious student-film spoof “Night of the Living Bread” by Kevin S. O’Brien (which also appeared in the double-cassette VHS edition) ; two commentary tracks with Romero, Russo, Russ Streiner, Eastman, Karl Hardman and others. One very illuminating allotment of this DVD for non-film-scholars is visually expressionless but informative — several histories outlining the beginning of Romero’s Latent Image company, on Hardman and Eastman’s company, and how the two were married to build Night of the Living Dreary.

THIS is the honest edition of Night of the Living Tedious, the one to accumulate for both fans and non-fans alike. It includes all the significant people (search for that Russo, Streiner and Bill Hinzman were included in this release, despite their criminal participation in the 30th Anniversary Edition), and it presents the film the scheme it wants to be seen.
Now I’m waiting for a deluxe release of Dawn of the Expressionless and Day of the Uninteresting…

“Runt House On The Prairie” Season Eight was the final year of the ragged series; Season 9 and the following TV movies revolved around the unique(er) cast after Charles and his family moved to the city. As a result, most fans of this beloved program deem this to be the final season and the best of this long running family advantageous dramatic program.
Mary and Adam depart to Current York in season eight and return for a Christmas visit with the entire family in the Ingallses runt house. Nellie also moves and Mrs. Oleson adopts a modern daughter who is even more warped (bear it or not) than Nellie ever was. Cassandra and James’ uncle strikes it substantial and tries to choose his niece and nephew away from Charles and Caroline on the eve of their upright adoption. Percival and Nellie disappear Recent York so that Percival can hurry the family business. The Olesons resolve adopt a girl named Nancy who is even more unfriendly than Nellie ever was. Suffice it to say, Mrs. Oleson falls in savor with her fresh adopted daughter.
The Reincarnation of Nellie (share 2) (October 5, 1981)
Coincidentally (because Nellie moved there in the previous episode), Adam and Mary travel to Modern York at the beginning of the episode. Where Nellie was simply a disagreeable brat, Nancy proves to be a demented creature hell-bent on causing effort. With the benefit of Albert and Willie, Mrs. Wilder’s students devise a idea to instruct this monster a lesson.
Growin’ Trouble (October 12, 1981)
The entire Ingalls home is in disarray with all of the children living under one (petite) roof. Albert is especially annoyed, especially with James. Charles takes the time to remind him that Laura and Carrie never made him feel unwelcome when he first came to live with them. James runs away because he feels he won’t be missed. Albert goes after him and the brothers learn to catch along before they arrive succor home.
Dark Fable (October 26, 1981)
Dr. Baker gets a unique associate, Dr. Caleb Ledoux. Dr. Ledoux finds that the town of Walnut Grove could exhaust a lesson in tolerance, especially his recent associate Dr. Baker. A women in labor needs immediate medical attention and her bigoted husband refuses to allow Dr. Ledoux to assist her because he is African-American. Charles has to punch the ignorant bigot out so that his wife can find obliging medical attention. In the kill, Dr. Baker sees his mistakes and Dr. Ledoux agrees to conclude in town.
A Wiser Heart (November 2, 1981)
Laura meets up with her sister-in-law, Eliza Jane at a literary conference in Arizona. The ladies regain in a putrid fight because Eliza Jane thinks that Laura is keeping her from their teacher who Eliza has a crush on. Approach to earn out, the teacher wants to salvage closer to Laura who doesn’t want to have any section of him. There’s also a couple of laughable scenes when Laura took a part-time job as a dishwasher (Leslie Landon-Etta Plum in season 9 – Michael Landon’s daughter has a cameo as another dishwasher) .
Gambini The Mountainous (November 9, 1981)
Charles and Nels grief about the dangers of emulating a traveling circus performer who comes to Walnut Grove.
The Narrative of Murky Jake (November 16, 1981)
Although not one of my favorites, this episode is sort-of a screwball episode. It was not the usual drama; it was more silly. Crooks advance to town and kidnap Mr. Oleson trying to gain Mrs. Oleson to pay ransom. They also kidnap several other people but leave town without hurting anyone.
Chicago (November 23, 1981)
Charles goes to Chicago to be with Mr. Edwards (a longtime Ingalls family friend, since the unusual pilot movie) because his adopted son John, Jr., died. The cause of John, Jr.’s death was a mystery and Charles and Mr. Edwards enlist the attend of the newspaper that John worked for.
For The Cherish of Nancy (November 30, 1981)
Mean-spirited Nancy is at her most devilish in this episode. Elmer, an overweight schoolmate takes a liking to Nancy and foolishly thinks she befriended him. Elmer learns a priceless lesson in self-respect.
Wave of the Future (December 7, 1981)
Mrs. Oleson buys into a restaurant franchise causing Hester-Sue and Caroline to nearly stay because of all the extra work.
A Christmas They Never Forgot (December 21, 1981)
The entire Ingalls family, including Laura, Almonzo, Adam, Mary and Hester-Sue take past Christmas memories around the Ingalls table. This is also Mary and Adam’s final appearance.
No Beast So Fierce (January 4, 1982)
James makes friends with Gideon Hale, a schoolmate that stutters. There are damage feelings when Gideon overhears James cruelly making fun of him. A wolf that follows James and Charles on a delivery perambulate may occupy the key for bringing Gideon out of his shell.
Stone Soup (January 18, 1982)
Laura finds that balancing her career and managing Almonzo’s orchard, while he and Charles are gone on a delivery roam to Arizona, too mighty to handle.
The Legacy (January 25, 1982)
The modern episode shows a new scene (from the 1980’s) with a flashback to this episode. Charles beings making tables so that he could pass on a legacy. Charles soon realizes that memories of his family is a lot more well-known.
Uncle Jed (February 1, 1982)
Uncle Jed comes into a lot of money (he struck gold) and comes to claim his estranged niece and nephew. A court battle ensues with Jed telling Charles that he will never procure.
Second Chance (February 8, 1982)
Hester-Sue’s ex-husband comes to town trying to derive her serve. She reluctantly agrees to trust him again only to be let down.
Days of Sunshine, Days of Shadow (1) (February 15, 1982)
The Wilders’ marriage is save to its first major test when Almonzo, soon after recovering from an illness, is stricken by a stroke. This was a ninety shrimp episode.
Days of Sunshine, Days of Shadow (2) (February 22, 1982)
Almonzo, bitter at his apparent life-crippling illness, nearly gives up on life, despite the birth of tiny Rose. His attitude nearly drives Laura to mediate leaving her husband. A tornado that destroys the farmstead may own the key to both of their futures.
A Promise To Preserve (March 1, 1982)
Mr. Edwards comes befriend to Walnut Grove for obedient because Grace divorces him (he started drinking again and she and Alicia did not want to have anything to do with him) . Mr. Edwards’ longtime friendship with Charles is assign to the test when Mr. Edwards risks Albert’s safety while he’s drunk.
A Faraway Sob (March 8, 1982)
A longtime friend of Caroline writes to her and asks for wait on. Her friend is pregnant and lives at a gold prospector’s camp where there is an outbreak of influenza. With Dr. Baker’s aid, Caroline agrees to go because she knows that her dear friend wouldn’t ask if she wasn’t in need of dire assistance.
He Was Only Twelve (1) (May 3, 1982)
James joins Charles, Albert and Mr. Edwards as they depart to Sleepy Watch for a delivery. James is shot in a store robbery and goes into a coma.
He Was Only Twelve (2) (May 10, 1982)
When everyone has given up on unpleasant James, Charles keeps his faith and hopes for the best. This is the final episode of “Itsy-bitsy House On The Prairie” before it was renamed to “Runt House: A Modern Beginning.” This is also the last episode with the core cast of Charles and Caroline and their children, because they fade away in the next season.
Season Eight features the introduction of Nancy, the birth of Rose, the kidnapping of Nels by two incompetent crook-wannabes, the investigation of John Jr.’s death in Chicago, Christmas reminiscing from our popular characters, the return of Hester Sue’s ex-husband, and the miraculous recovery of James in the season finale. By this season, most of the plots revolve around more “adult” matters than those of the earlier years, but it is no less wholesome and heartwarming. A priceless indicate to grow up on!

This 1980’s series, loosely based on Scott O’Dell’s recent “The King’s Fifth” is a favorable blend of Japanese animation, French writing, and some of the best music ever.

The series which is one gargantuan tale arc follows a group of Spaniards in the 16th century who go looking for a city of gold that is hidden somewhere in Central or South America, they are accompanied by an Inca girl who can decipher clues to its residence and later meet other people along the scheme.
The storyline includes mythology of lost continents of Atlantis and Mu (Hiva in this chronicle), and of their supposed highly advanced technology that rivals today’s.

This series was the jewel of Nickelodeon’s television programming in the 1980’s and became a cult classic. It was previously released on DVD in Quebec and France in the early 2000’s and Japan a few years later. It is now state for a long overdue US release with righteous special features.
I speculate that the success of bootleg copies of the series may have contributed to it finally being released on DVD in English speaking countries objective like what happened with the series Sea Quest DSV.
The series also includes a music soundtrack by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy recorded with synthesizers which is obedient of a Grammy and an Emmy. This soundtrack is better than most movie soundtracks and has been released on LP and CD over the decades.
I am gratified about this release and will be buying both editions. It is a display that people who watched it growing up will want their kids to observe. I watched this all the time when it was on Nickelodeon in the 80’s and am joyful it is getting the release it deserves.
After 20 years of waiting, its finally here.
The Mysterious Cities of Gold is a display most of children would have seen on Nickelodeon in the mid-80’s. A rare collaboration between French writers and Japanese animators (overseen by none other than Hayao Miyazaki himself), it combined strong characters with rich artwork, and plot it all in a more or less historically proper 15th century Meso-America. 39 episodes in length, this series tells one continuous narrative, told primarily from the viewpoint of the show’s three main child characters.
Along their flow, these children point to the virtues of adore, friendship, kindness, and self-sacrifice, without any of the artificial constructs normally placed into such stories. They learn and grow, becoming deeper, more primitive people as they inspect and arrive in contact with trusty South American cultures, which are painted in a definite light. The valuable antagonists are the invading Spaniards, seeking to glance the recent world’s gold for their gain profit.
From a decade where everything was a glorified half-hour toy commercial, the Mysterious Cities of Gold stood out due to it’s emphasis on narrative telling and character development. And, unlike other series of it’s time, when the tale ends, so does the series. No attempt was made to milk this reveal for every last penny, it has a clear open, middle, and raze, so there is a tangible sense of completion and satisfaction upon completing your viewing.
In addition, each episode contained, at the demolish, a brief history lesson about the valid world versions of items and places visited by the characters in that episode. These were cleave from various non-English versions of the series, but are here in elephantine educational glory.
Never before released on video (either VHS or DVD) in America before now, and filled with tremendous extras, this is something that should not be missed. For those of us that grew up watching the adventures of Esteban, to a whole novel generation of children that have never experienced a cartoon of this caliber, you simply cannot go unpleasant here.

Dragon Tales is a cartoon PBS series produced by the makers of Sesame Street. It focuses on two kids named Max and Emmy who obtain a magic dragon scale that allows them to visit Dragonland.
In Dragonland they play with their friends, Cassie, Ord, Zak and Wheezie, and Quetzal. Each record focuses on a different topic such a sharing, quandary solving, listening, dealing with bullys, etc. When one of the dragon does something hard or really special, their dragon badge glows.
My 2 1/2 year aged daughter loves this cartoon, and I must admit that I do too! We enjoy all three Dragon Fable DVD’s. This DVD has a better format than the “let’s portion, let’s play” DVD. With this DVD, you can resolve to play all episodes, settle your acquire episode, or play the explain alongs. Each of the five episodes included here play one honest after the other. I gave it four stars instead of five for that reason. It would have been nice if they had a jabber along after each episode so the sprint matches that of the TV series.
There is so many imaginative things here that it will be obvious to select any child’s attention. Bottom line: You can’t go injurious with this one for a boy or a girl!

My four-year-old has loved Dragon Tales since she was 3, and loves watching them over and over. She loves imaginative play such as make-believe, and watching 6-year-old Emmy and her 4-year-old brother Max go off into Dragon Land makes her wish she could do so too!
In “Dragon Tales – Don’t Give Up”, there are 5 episodes, “Pigment of Your Imagination”, “Backwards to Forwards”, “Tails You Lose”, “Sand Castle Hassle”, and “Bully for You”. The episodes are linked by 4 songs “Stretch”, “Pretend”, “Touch”, and “Droll Song”. The theme of these stories is about persevering and not giving up no matter what the obstacle. The Criterion edition is a tremendous improvement over the Fox Lorber version. The narrate quality is vastly better, with far less grain and markedly finer resolution; the subtitles are also positioned less obtrusively. I was vexed by another reviewer’s claim that the record ’shook’ – there was no shaking at all with my copy. The transfer was supervised and popular by the director of photography for the film, Raoul Coutard, so it is hardly surprising that it looks good; in some of the darker scenes there is some flickering, but this is hardly a major stammer. I actually found the Fox Lorber print difficult and annoying to peer, while the Criterion is completely savory, in fact better than prints I’ve seen at the cinema.

Having seen the film itself several times, I have to admit that on first viewing its gargantuan reputation was a bit baffling. My have expectations had been defeated, as I was expecting a film which was at core ‘realist’. On subsequent viewings, it became grand more rewarding, especially on encountering the belief that it is more a ‘fairy tale’ or, at least, a anecdote. When I stopped thinking of the film as ‘prose’ and allowed it to be appreciated as ‘poetry’, its spirit suddenly made sense. The style is truly fresh, and so inevitably preconceived expectations will be disappointed.

There is a pervasive light-hearted energy to the film, embodied in all aspects of its making, from the dancing camerawork, to the deft editing and waggish performances. And this provides a poignant incompatibility to the themes explored, which deal with denser issues of commitment and allegiance. The characters might well be taken as representing larger ideas, such as national identity, but any symbolism is gestural and open-ended, so the film never feels preachy.

The extras provided are extensive and give ample insight into the surprising background of the film – it is based on a book which in turn is a distanced recollection of the author’s experience – so, in a sense, this is a ‘true’ myth – although its tone is, as Truffaut puts it in an interview, more like a nostalgic traipsing through an extinct photo album.

Francois Truffaut’s Jules et Jim was a very common art-house movie in the early sixties. The murky and white French (English subtitled) film follows the friendship of two college students in bohemian Paris beginning in 1912. They meet Catherine, a free spirit who loves to shock people as powerful as she enjoys both men’s appreciate. She marries Jules, but is not cheerful. They reunite with Jim and continue their like triangle.

Jeanne Moreau’s Catherine is eternally alluring, selfish, manipulating, and cruel. She is perfect as the siren who plays with men as a cat plays with a mouse. Oscar Werner gives a sympathetic performance as the idealistic and vulnerable Jules, who goes from carefree youth to depressed middle-age. Henri Serre is well-cast as Jim, more serene and introspective, yet mild helplessly drawn to the enigmatic Catherine.
This is the kind of movie one admires more each time you contemplate it. At first, you are dependent on the subtitles; later you objective devour the scurry of scenes, the slack change in mood from youthful exuberance to subdued acceptance, and then the stark and tragic, yet inevitable, conclusion. If you like character-driven stories about unconventional people, you’ll like Jules and Jim.

This is a salubrious musical of its period with excellently staged numbers, favorable songs and a talented cast. I’ve been looking forward to seeing it ever since I glimpsed that incredible clip from it in “That’s Entertainment” aid in the 80s in which the cast did “Halleluja” (the finale) . And who could fail to like a movie with Ann Miller and Tony Martin in it? But, I have to say that one’s enjoyment of it is badly impaired by the abominable quality of the video. It is appallingly framed from the Cinemascope unusual, cutting out characters and ruining the dance perform – someone forgot to turn up the color, so that it’s so pale it looks almost like unlit and white – and worst of all (for a musical in particular), it was obviously recorded on a dirty magnetic sound head, making the soundtrack hopelessly muffled and grating, like an weak worn-out phonograph describe. Subtle sounds are totally lost and only the loudest noises atomize through the fuzz. This is quite unacceptable and deeply disappointing to a collector. Whoever produces MGM home videos should be ashamed of doing such a disservice to one of the greatest archives in Cinema history (not to mention the customers) . It seems as if the videos were copied without any monitor-control and packaged without being checked. Disgraceful. And it’s not the only one! I’m calm waiting for a decent copy of “An Ameriucan in Paris”.
Hit The Deck, is my approved musical, with Jane Powell. The music is unbelievable, and she was my common singer and actress in musicals. The movie is about sailors & girls and a musical production. All the actors are expansive, and the singing and dancing astonishing. I would reccomend this for everyone who likes musicals. It is well worth viewing. I hadn’t seen this movie since it came out in 1955, as it never was on TV, that I could behold. Thanks, Amazon, for making it available. It is a spectacular film.

Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” first appeared in a magazine in 1838. Since then, 13 motion represent versions have graced the silver conceal. Perhaps the uncontested classic was released in England in 1948. David Lean stands within a cramped circle of 20th Century film directors who could literally paint with a camera. And paint he did. Unlit and sulky, his “Oliver Twist” opens in an English countryside storm, as a pregnant young girl seeks shelter from the squall. She is about to give birth to Oliver Twist. Intentionally silent, there is no dialogue until seven minutes into the fable. The stage is plot for gothic deplorable and tragic foreboding. Lean auditioned 1500 boys for the lead role, but complained that, in each case, “there was nothing in the eyes”. He eventually settled on 8 year-old John Howard Davies. Hard-drinking Robert Newton plays Bill Sikes. Alec Guinness appeared in 6 David Lean productions. His second was here as Fagin. Future movie beauty Diana Dors has a petite piece. Peter Bull and Francis L. Sullivan are outstanding in supporting roles. Filmed in the shadows of St. Paul’s Cathedral, “Oliver Twist” reveals the circuitous, seamy London backwaters of the 19th Century. I have to say it. The extras for this Criterion DVD are rather “lean”. However, it does bear a trailer, and 12 minutes of film censored from the new 1951 U.S. release. These scenes reveal Fagin giving a pick-pocket lesson, and counting his jewels. Charles Dickens and David Lean were unprejudiced at the beginning of their long and prodigious careers when each released their acquire versions of “Oliver Twist”. Amazingly for both, the best was yet to near.
It’s hard to know where to originate in explaining what makes David Lean’s “Oliver Twist” one of the most nearly perfect films ever made. It is a work of art and inspires dread in its every aspect. The shadowy and white photography is incandescent, and the myth is told as worthy visually as in dialog. The music is consuming and triumphant one diminutive, eerie and chilling the next, perfectly augmenting the visual mood. The acting is trustworthy, the characterizations unforgettable. Alec Guinness IS Fagin, Robert Newton IS Bill Sykes, the improbable Francis L. Sullivan IS Mr. Bumble. No other actors have ever advance discontinuance to delineating those characters as well, nor could they after these hallmark performances. This movie is seeping with art, yet the art is non-intrusive. Rather, the film is an awe-inspiring delight from beginning to destroy.
As for the Criterion DVD, it’s a very suited transfer from what was probably the best print available — a heavenly proper print considering its age. Regarding brightness and difference, all the beauty of the sunless & white photography seems to have been preserved, and the sound, although only as ample as 1948 standards, is not distorted and does not unduly blueprint attention to itself.
If you like movies, this DVD should be in your collection if only for its curious difference with some of the original color epics you undoubtedly maintain. If you have never seen it before, be forewarned that there are scenes in this masterwork that will permanently effect themselves into your brain, to be recalled later by association many times in your life when similar images are seen, and when similar music is heard.
